Joseph Roth: Characteristics of the fictional world

This thesis analyses Roth's novels of the 1930s as a complex fictional macroworld. It is through fictional characters, the category of space and associated motifs and symbols that the decadent and specifically patriarchal semantics of the Habsburg world are examined. The main point of interest is the conflict between traditional and nationalized patriarchy outlined by Stritecky. The paper analyses the manifestations of the gradual disintegration of the basic value pillars of this patriarchal world, against the background of the dynamic tension between the centre and the periphery of the Habsburg monarchy. These pillars are the army, the bureaucracy, religious faith; the authority of the emperor, father and husband. In the first part (the centre), the degradation of these values is analysed in relation to the figures representing the centre of the empire. In the second and third parts (periphery; behind the curtain), the secondary figures of the representatives of the periphery, or women, come to the fore. Through these characters, the non-vital nature of nationalised patriarchalism is exposed. Gender analysis of the development of the characters "M" and Moneypenny from the James Bond film series

In my thesis write about gender analysis of development of characters "M " and Moneypenny from James Bond, Her Majesty's Agent, film series. Film series is representing James Bond as executive power which is maintaining Status Quo of imperial force - Great Britain. From aspect of gender, there is no change in film character, except last movies where was acting Daniel Craig. In his acting main character appears humanized, there is a change in perceiving masculinity and in behavior towards women. The characters of "M" and Moneypenny are changing through whole film series and developing a lot of gender changes according to geopolitics and social changes. These changes I will examine through feminist analysis based on concept of power, aspects of patriarchy power structure according to imperialistic ideas and changes of these principles in process of confrontation with feminism.

Pregnant in Lima: female body, social stratification and urban space

How is the experience of pregnancy in a patriarchal society shaped by pregnant women's socioeconomic status? So far, qualitative studies have primarily focused on the effect of socioeconomic status in healthcare, and unintended conception in poor adolescents. Based on a 17-month comparative ethnography conducted in Lima, the hyper-stratified capital of Peru, this dissertation addresses experiences of women of different socioeconomic dispositions including conception, abortion, and (inter)personal lived pregnancy experience. The dissertation employs the concept of reproductive habitus to reflect on the differing classed and gendered dispositions in women of different socioeconomic statuses as an embodiment of institutions: the institution of patriarchy and healthcare institutions. The dissertation identifies status-related reproductive dispositions/differences in forming pregnancy experience in four areas: (i) in women's conception circumstances primarily in terms of pregnancy (non)intentionality, women's childbearing age span, relationship status (integrity), and male partner (non)abandonment (desertion). Does gender play a role in peace journalism practices? An analysis of the Armenian and Azerbaijani coverage of the 44 days Karabakh war

This study explores peace journalism practices in the context of the 44 days Karabakh war and whether the reporter's gender matters in applying this approach. The research draws on analysis of eight conducted reconstruction interviews with Armenian and Azerbaijani female and male reporters. The results show that peace journalism faces several challenges in the region: from press freedom restrictions, to the prohibition of accessing the war zone especially for the Azerbajani reporters, to the fear of being targeted as traitors, and to the additional difficulties of those reporters who are refugees themselves. Furthemore, when applying gender lenses to the analysis, the impact of patriarchal norms in the reporters' work is evident. While women were more likely to access war victims, but faced challenges when embedded in the masculine environment of the army, men would be seen as 'weak' for adopting a more peaceful approach in their reporting. Although there is no shared view among the respondents on the role of the reporter's gender in appling peace journalism, the ingrained gender roles of the two societies help explain why female reporters are more likely than their male colleagues to embrace peace journalism. Woman as an opponent: manifestations of sexism in magazine Maxim

The central question of this diploma thesis is, whether sexisms is a commonplace phenomenon of our society, how does this phenomenon appears in our public discourse of present-day society and how can we identify it. The diploma thesis searches the answers for this question mainly in theories of radical feminism, which are part of the second feministic wave, in present theories concerning sexism and patriarchy, in present theories about mens` lifestyle magazines and in an empirical research. Radical feminism` theories specify the manifestations of sexism. The current theories unfold the strategies through which is sexism ventilated. The empirical research then includes an analysis of Czech lifestyle magazine for men Maxim, specifically the analysis of 23 articles selected from one complete volume of this magazine, specifically 2012. The method of coding according to Strauss and Corbin was chosen as the key method. Based on the scope of this method (the selective coding part) the central category was identified and named as Women as an opponent. Its characterization and dimensional scales (in form of variable strategies) were defined as well. Wives and Whores: Female characters in the plays of Harold Pinter

This BA thesis discusses four female characters from three plays of the British dramatist Harold Pinter, placing them in context of depicting 'The Femine.' Pinter's female characters must not only be seen in the tradition of stereotypical depicting women, but also in context of the patriarchal concepts they have to face - the male dominance, male gaze and male bonding. The second chapter provides background for discussing female characters - reasons why to do so are provided and the idea of woman as 'the Other' is introduced. This concept led to the stereotyping of women and subsequently to their misrepresentation in fiction. The basic dichotomy of 'wife/whore' is investigated. The chapter also examines the specifics of representation on the stage with references to the development of drama. It concludes with placing Pinter within this context. The third chapter contains close reading of three Pinter's plays - The Homecoming, Old Times and Betrayal. The roles of female characters are examined in relationship to the power structures they are trying to dismantle. The chapter argues that even if they manage it, the victory does not challenge the patriarchal structure as such. The fourth chapter is focused on realisation of Pinter on Czech stages. Gender in compulsory reading - Old greek myths and legends: gender analysis of the writing

This thesis Gender in compulsory reading - Old Greek Myths and Legends: Gender analysis of the writing deals with literary representation of gender issues in mentioned writing, written by Eduard Petiška. The very analysis is based on analysing of gender topics and issues we are interested in and focused on. These topics are compared and showed using examples from particular myths and legend. The question whether these topics are influenced by patriarchal order in the society is the crucial for this thesis. Despite the variability of Petiška's writing, which is necessarily caused by variations of ancient and continuously construated stories; some patterns and systems are there to be found and explored by contemporary gender theories, mostly by feministic literature criticism. In this thesis the method of resisting reading according to Judith Fetterley is used. The deconstruction of the text and its hidden values which are based on male domination and the reconstruction of it in order to show the new perspective at the same moment are the main goals of resisting reading. A Comparison of Approaches to Gender Socialization in the Sluníčko Magazine in 1977 and 2012

The diploma thesis Comparison of methods of gender socialization in the Sluníčko magazine in 1977 and 2012, focuses on the topic of gender in printed magazine for the youngest children. Specifically, it examines and compares the methods for portraying female and male characters in the text and illustrations in the Sluníčko magazine in 1977 and 2012. It analyzes the ways gender is viewed and considers its impact on gender socialization of children. The research consists of a quantitative part, which aims to evaluate the frequency of the representation and of qualitative part, which aims at content analysis and interpretation of the meanings hidden in the text and illustrations. For the analysing texts and illustrations were selected of two areas, family relationships in the private sector and relationships at work in the public sphere. At the theoretical level were used sociology, psychology, feminist theory and gender studies theories. The way-out of this research is the assumption that aesthetic and educational ambitions of Sluníčko magazine combined with aging readership of this magazine is a important element of gender socialization of children and, therefore, the aim is to find out whether the gender socialization is implemented in a gender-sensitive way.

Portrayal of Female Family Members in Selected Works by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the position of women in Nigerian family and to estimate the extent of their emancipation and/or dependence on men in Nigerian society, traditionally considered to be patriarchal. The analysis is based on the interpretation of the novels Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun and the short story collection The Thing around Your Neck, written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a prominent contemporary Nigerian author. The theoretical part focuses on political, social and economic representations of women in pre- colonial Nigeria and in colonial and modern, post-colonial Nigeria. An antidote to the stereotypical depiction of women in African literature, Adichie's work typically presents female characters who are educated, independent and emancipated. This stands to challenge the image of Nigerian women who are dominated and controlled by men.

Transformation of the approach to the gender roles in magazine Vlasta between 1991 and 2010

In my work I map the transformation of gender through media editorial in the journal Vlasta topics in 1991 and 2010 and how tthe communist regime influenced the thematic transformation of magazine in Czechoslovakia. In my work I also examine whether Vlasta magazine in 1991, presents a feminist ideas that have a negative connotation, as Osvaldová mentioned. The work is divided into three basic sections of theoretical, methodological and analytical. The theoretical part describes the current scientific discourse and puts the work in a social media context. This section presents the main concepts such as feminism, gender, gender stereotypes and patriarchy. It also mentions the importance of media and women's magazines for the female audience and the transformation of women's role in society before 1989 and after. In the methodological part, through open and axial coding I examine media content. In my research, I identify and describe significant editorial issues with which woman is associated in Vlasta magazine in 1991 and in 2010. Furthermore, using content analysis, I compare the contents of the magazine Vlasta 1991 and 2010 in terms of private and public spheres.
